About Prop 65 California Warning
Many people are concerned about the California Proposition 65 Warning which is completely understandable!
Here's the definition straight from their website:
"Proposition 65 requires businesses to provide warnings to Californians about significant exposures to chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. These chemicals can be in the products that Californians purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment."
So I'm sure you can understand why it's a concern when you see this label!
HERE is a list of all of the natural or synthetic chemicals that they have listed and is updated once a year.
This is an awesome list to go through & you could also use this list to your advantage on ingredients and contaminants to avoid.
If you're really paying attention, you will see this label on MANY food and products.
Here's my take on this label:
This label is pretty generalized. It's not taking into consideration how often it's being used, route of exposure, or if a company 3rd party tests for this + is under the guidelines of exposure.
A great example would be herbal teas. Even if they are fully organic, they can have naturally occurring heavy metals in them. A company will likely just comply to add the warning on their label as extra precaution to the customer. This does NOT mean that the product is unsafe.
What I'd love to know about the tea: 1) Is it USDA organic? 2) Do they 3rd party test for heavy metals? 3) Is this company committed to safety?
You can find this label on pretty much any type of product from household products, food, construction parts, this goes on...
Get informed on the quality & the transparency of a company. If you saw this label on a fast food wrapper (concerning) and a bag of USDA organic, 3rd party tested, loose leaf tea (not as concerning), there's a big difference in the quality and safety of these two different companies.
So let me summarize. Yes this warning CAN be concerning but the type of product, route of exposure, quality, testing, ingredient of concern, and amount exposure are all things that should be considered! This is why it is so important to be an informed consumer and choose companies that take their safety seriously.
I hope this was helpful!
