Butyloctyl Salicylate (BOS) | What This Means in Sunscreen

What I’ve learned:

➡️ this is mainly used to help sunscreen feel better and apply more smoothly so it’s not as thick or clunky

➡️ it can absorb some UV light, which is why it gets compared to chemical filters, but it doesn’t behave the same way in the body

➡️ molecular size plays a role here ‼️

Salicylates are a whole category, BOS (butyloctyl salicylate) is just one version of it. Others like salicylic acid and ethylhexyl salicylate are smaller and can penetrate the skin more easily. BOS is larger, so it’s thought to absorb less, but there’s not much direct research on the absorption aspect.

Butyloctyl salicylate is an ingredient that’s been getting a lot of attention lately in the "lowtox" space, especially in “clean” and mineral sunscreens. Some of what’s being shared is helpful, but some of it is creating a lot of unnecessary fear. This is, yet again, another NUANCE ingredient. 

At a basic level, this ingredient is used to make sunscreen feel better. It helps dissolve zinc oxide so the formula spreads more easily, feels lighter on the skin, and doesn’t leave as much of a white cast... IYKYK about mineral sunscreens.

It wasn’t originally created as a sunscreen filter. It’s considered a cosmetic ingredient that improves texture and performance.

This is where the conversation starts to get confusing......

BUTYLOCTYL SALICYLATE CAN ABSORB UVB LIGHT

Because it contains a salicylate structure, it has the ability to absorb UVB light. That’s the same general job that sunscreen filters do.

This is why you’ll see people say it’s a “hidden chemical filter” or that brands are being misleading when they include it in mineral sunscreens.

There is some truth to the labeling concern, but that does not automatically mean it behaves the same way in the body as traditional chemical filters.

MOLECULAR STRUCTURE PLAYS A BIG ROLE

Some chemical sunscreen filters are small enough to pass through the skin and enter the bloodstream. That’s where concerns like hormone disruption come in.

Butyloctyl salicylate has a different molecular structure. 

It has a larger, bulkier structure which makes it much less likely to pass through the skin barrier. Instead of moving through the skin, it's less likely to penetrate.

Because of that, it’s generally considered to have a lower level of concern when it comes to systemic absorption compared to some traditional chemical filters.

HOW IT’S USED HERE PLAYS A BIG ROLE

Just like with other ingredients, how you’re exposed to something is important.

If something isn't significantly absorbed, it cannot interact with hormones or the endocrine system in the same way.

This is honestly one of the biggest differences between this ingredient and the chemical filters that tend to raise more concern.

WHAT THE DATA SHOWS RIGHT NOW

From the research available:

A lot of the available data comes from lab testing and modeling, not direct human studies, which is why there are still some gaps in what we fully know.

  • it does not show evidence of hormone disruption
  • it is not known to significantly absorb into the bloodstream when used topically
  • it has been reviewed and considered low risk at normal use levels
  • it is stable in sunlight and does not break down into harmful byproducts

So while some of the content online labels it as toxic, the current data does not support that level of concern. 

⚠️ WHERE LABELING CAN BE CONFUSING

As always, labeling tends to have loopholes sometimes that I don't agree with. 

Butyloctyl salicylate is classified as a cosmetic ingredient, not an active sunscreen ingredient. Because of that, brands can include it in formulas and still label their sunscreen as “100% mineral.”

Even though it can absorb UV light, it does not have to be listed in the active ingredient section.

So this is more of a transparency issue than a safety one.

THOUGHTS ON PREGNANCY

➡️ This is more of a gray area. This ingredient hasn’t been clearly studied in pregnancy, so there isn’t a direct answer here.

➡️ Because it’s part of the salicylate family, this is something people tend to be a bit more cautious with during pregnancy, especially depending on how much is being used. 

➡️ What I would personally do: This isn’t something I’d panic over, but during pregnancy I’d personally just choose a mineral sunscreen without it since it’s an easy swap.

Until there’s more research, this just isn’t something I’d take a risk on. The risk is likely very low, but with pregnancy I’d personally just avoid it.

WHAT I'M PERSONALLY OK WITH

➡️ based on what we know right now, this is a low‑concern ingredient when used in typical amounts 
➡️ between its structure, how it’s used, and the available data, I personally feel comfortable using it
➡️ there’s still more research to be had, so I think it’s worth understanding rather than ignoring completely
➡️ butyloctyl salicylate in mineral sunscreens when it is used in typical amounts
➡️ products that are otherwise well formulated and transparent
➡️ understanding what it does without automatically assuming it is harmful
➡️ finding trusted companies

WHAT I THINK IS IMPORTANT

➡️ how brands are labeling their sunscreens (transparency)

➡️ whether something is being marketed as fully mineral when this is included

I don’t base my decisions on fear‑based claims without context or assuming all salicylates behave the same way in the body. There is nuance to some ingredients and this is one of them.

At the end of the day, this is not an ingredient I personally avoid across the board. It’s just one I think is worth understanding. The biggest issue here is not toxicity, it’s transparency.

STUDY 1

⚪️ Just because something falls into the salicylate category doesn’t mean it acts the same in your body. Even within that group, they don’t all break down into salicylic acid the same way. Some convert more, some convert very little, and some don’t at all. In this study, they looked at a variety of them and found:

➡️ they all behave differently
➡️ they don’t all produce the same level of salicylic acid
➡️ some barely contribute

So basically, even if 2 ingredients are both “salicylates”, they do NOT all act the same + they do NOT all create the same amount of salicylic acid.
