Potassium Sorbate | The “Clean” Preservative… But Is It?

What I’ve learned:

➡️ it’s a widely used preservative and generally considered safe

➡️ not all preservatives are equal, but some are lower concern than others

➡️ for me, ingestion vs topical use is where I draw the line

Quick overview... full breakdown below ⬇️

Potassium Sorbate is a preservative, and there are many products that do require preservatives to prevent things like mold growth. Without some type of preservation, products, especially anything water‑based, can spoil or grow bacteria pretty quickly.

Personally, I look for safer preservatives rather than eliminating them altogether in products that actually need them.

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has deemed Potassium Sorbate (and Sorbic Acid) safe for use in both food and personal care products.

That being said, I look at food a little differently......

Because it’s something we’re directly ingesting, I personally prefer to limit preservatives in food when possible and stick with more whole, real options. Not necessarily because every small amount is harmful, but because it can add up over time.

You’ll see this preservative in a lot of “clean” products and this is where it can get a little confusing.

“Clean” doesn’t always mean preservative‑free.... it just means different choices are being made. For me, this really comes down to context.

Topical use and ingestion are very different, and that’s where I draw the line.

My stance:

✅ okay in skincare / personal care
❌ not something I personally choose to ingest

At the end of the day, I’m more comfortable with this in products used on the skin, but more mindful when it comes to what I’m actually ingesting.
