Titanium Dioxide | Nano vs Non‑Nano Explained

 What I’ve learned:

  • the main concern comes down to particle size (nano vs non‑nano)
  • how you’re exposed to it plays a big role in how I look at it
  • ingestion and inhalation are where most of the concern comes in

There’s more to this. I break it down below ⬇️

Titanium dioxide is one of the biggest topics right now, especially when it comes to ingredients in food and personal care products.

You’ll see it used as a bright white pigment in things like cosmetics, sunscreens, foods, and even pharmaceuticals.... At first glance, it can seem like a pretty simple ingredient but this is one where the details make a big difference.

The biggest factor here is whether the titanium dioxide is nano or non‑nano.

➡️ Nano titanium dioxide is made up of extremely small particles <100nm, which gives it very different properties compared to larger particles

Because of its size, nano titanium dioxide has the potential to be absorbed into the body through the skin, lungs, or digestive system. Research has found that nanoparticles can cause oxidative stress, which can lead to inflammation and other biological effects depending on exposure.

➡️ Non‑nano titanium dioxide has much larger particles > 100nm

Because of that size, it is considered unlikely to be absorbed or accumulate in the body when used topically. This is why you’ll often see non‑nano titanium dioxide used in mineral sunscreens as a UV blocker.

Route of exposure also plays a big role here

➡️ ❌ Inhalation is one of the biggest concerns: Titanium dioxide has been classified as a Group 2B carcinogen when inhaled by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

Because of that, I personally avoid it in products like loose powders or sprays where it can be breathed in.

➡️ Ingestion is another area where I’m more cautious. Food‑grade titanium dioxide is used as a color enhancer or additive and can contain nano‑sized particles. In the U.S., it can be found in things like candies, chewing gum, coffee creamers, and baked goods.

There are also concerns around heavy metal contamination depending on sourcing.

The EU has officially banned titanium dioxide in foods, and that’s definitely something worht paying attention to. Personally, this is not something I choose to consume

➡️ ⚠️ When it comes to topical use, especially with non‑nano forms, this is a very different conversation. At this point, non‑nano titanium dioxide does not show the same level of concern when used on the skin, especially since it does not penetrate in the same way.

But I still care about quality. That’s why third‑party testing, especially for heavy metals, is something I personally look for.

So this is one of those ingredients where context changes how I look at it. It’s not just about the ingredient itself. It’s about the size, the form, and how it’s being used.

What I'm okay with personally:

  • non‑nano titanium dioxide (greater than 100nm) in products
  • products that are third‑party tested, especially for heavy metals
  • being mindful of how the product is used depending on exposure

What I try and avoid as best as possible:

  • nano titanium dioxide (less than 100nm)
  • inhalation such as loose powders or sprays
  • ingesting it through food products
  • anything without clear testing or transparency

At the end of the day, this isn’t something I avoid across the board but I it is one of those ingredients I'm more intentional about when reading a label. It really comes down to particle size, exposure, and knowing what I’m using.
