Mica | Should You Be Concerned?

What I’ve learned:
➡️ mica is not something I automatically avoid
➡️ the main concern is ethical sourcing, not the ingredient itself
➡️ it comes down to sourcing, use, and transparency

This is just an overview.... I go deeper into this below ⬇️

Mica is used to give products that shimmer or glow, especially in makeup. You’ll commonly see it in products like highlighters, eyeshadows, powders, and even some skincare.

The main concerns with mica usually come down to inhalation and ethical sourcing. Inhalation is primarily a concern for workers who are exposed to it daily or in larger quantities, especially in environments where particles are airborne.

For everyday use, this isn’t something I personally stress about too much, but it’s still something I’m mindful of when it comes to loose powder products.

The bigger concern for most people is how mica is sourced. It has historically been mined in areas where labor practices are not always transparent, and in some cases this has involved child labor. That’s why sourcing matters so much with this ingredient.

This is one of those ingredients where the bigger concern isn’t the ingredient itself, it’s how it’s sourced.

This is also something that can be done the right way. There are brands that prioritize ethical sourcing, work with traceable supply chains, and are open about where and how their mica is obtained. Because of that, I always recommend reaching out to brands and asking questions if it’s not clearly stated. Transparency really is the deciding factor here.

Mica itself isn’t something I’m personally concerned about in a finished product. It really comes down to how it’s sourced, how it’s used in the formula, and the potential for contamination.

So for me, this isn’t an ingredient I avoid across the board.... it’s one I evaluate based on the brand behind it.

What to look for

➡️ brands that are transparent about where their mica is sourced

➡️ ethical sourcing practices / traceable supply chains

➡️ clear answers when I ask questions

What to try and stay away from

➡️ brands that don’t disclose sourcing at all

➡️ vague or generic responses when asked

➡️ loose powder products where inhalation could be a concern
