Phenoxyethanol | Replacing Parabens… But at What Cost?
What I’ve learned:
➡️ it’s used everywhere, especially as a replacement for parabens
➡️ it’s generally considered “safe” at low levels, but that doesn’t mean it’s without concerns
➡️ what stands out to me is how often it shows up across multiple products
This is just a starting point.... I break this down more below ⬇️

Phenoxyethanol is a newer ingredient getting a lot of attention right now, especially since it’s become a common replacement for parabens in many products.
It’s a preservative that you’ll see in a lot of cosmetics, skincare, and personal care products, and it’s usually one of the first ingredients I look for on a label & this is why…
| It’s part of the glycol ether family and is created through a reaction involving phenol and ethylene oxide. Because of how it’s made, there is potential for trace contamination, including 1,4‑dioxane (a known carcinogen) |
It’s also important to understand that preservatives are used to extend shelf life and prevent things like bacterial growth, so this isn’t something brands are adding for no reason.
BUT not all preservatives are equal
The American Society of Contact Dermatitis lists phenoxyethanol as a core allergen, even at concentrations as low as 1%.
It was originally considered a “safer” alternative to parabens, which is why you now see it in a lot of products marketed as “clean” or “natural”.
So a lot of people assume they’re choosing a better option… without realizing it’s often just been swapped for something else.
Beyond contamination concerns, it has been associated with things like skin irritation, allergic reactions, lung irritation, and potential effects on the nervous system.
There have also been reports of it affecting infants when used in certain products, including concerns related to central nervous system depression and digestive issues.
If you search phenoxyethanol, most sources will say it’s safe at concentrations under 1%… But what isn’t really talked about is cumulative exposure. Using multiple products daily that all contain it adds up, and once you start looking, you’ll notice it’s in a lot of products.
What I try to look for
- products that rely on safer or alternative preservative systems
- brands that are transparent about their ingredient choices
- formulas that don’t default to phenoxyethanol as the main preservative
What I try and stay away from
- phenoxyethanol listed high on the ingredient list
- products that rely heavily on it across multiple categories (skincare, makeup, personal care)
- vague “clean” claims without real transparency
- stacking multiple products daily that all contain it (cumulative exposure)
