Synthetic Ingredients | Are They Really a Problem?
What I’ve learned:
- “synthetic” doesn’t automatically mean bad/harmful
- “natural” doesn’t automatically mean safe
- what does matter is the data behind it and how it’s being used
There’s more to this... let me break it down below ⬇️

Synthetic ingredients are FILLED with nuance (ya know, gray area).
Not all synthetics are toxic.
Not all natural ingredients are safe. There's just more to it.
A lot of the conversation around ingredients focuses on “natural vs synthetic,” but that doesn’t always tell you anything about safety.
It really comes down to a few things:
➡️ safety data
➡️ long‑term research
➡️ level of exposure
There are synthetic ingredients that have been studied for YEARS and are considered low concern.
And there are natural ingredients that can be irritating, sensitizing, or even harmful depending on how they’re used.
➡️ For example, there are naturally occurring substances like arsenic and cyanide that are completely natural… but obviously not something you’d consider safe.
Even certain essential oils, while natural, can cause irritation or sensitization, especially with repeated use or in higher concentrations.
On the flip side, some synthetic ingredients are created in controlled environments where they’re purified, standardized, and consistently tested. This can actually make them more predictable and sometimes a lower concern than an unrefined natural ingredient.
I don’t make decisions based on whether something is natural or synthetic alone. I look at the bigger picture. Something used topically in a cosmetic product is very different than an ingredient you’re eating or consuming daily.
I’m personally okay with certain synthetic ingredients in cosmetics, especially when they’ve been well studied and used at appropriate levels. But when it comes to food or supplements, I’m much more selective because that’s something we’re directly ingesting.
I don’t follow the mindset of “all synthetics are bad”. But I also don’t assume they’re all harmless either.
What I try to look for
- ingredients that have strong safety data
- products that are formulated intentionally
- understanding how and where I’m being exposed
What I try to limit or avoid
- unnecessary additives
- synthetic ingredients in food or supplements
- high or repeated exposure without much data
At the end of the day, this comes down to being an informed consumer and using that information to make intentional choices. Not everything needs to be avoided but not everything should be used blindly either.

I break down ingredients and share low-tox swaps in a simple, no-overwhelm way. I personally check every ingredient list before I share anything, so you can feel confident in what you’re choosing. Mom of 3, so I keep things realistic.
