Sorbitol | One to Worry About… or Not Really?
What I’ve learned:
- overall this ingredient is pretty neutral
- more of a functional ingredient than a beneficial one
- not something I’m overly concerned about at low levels
There’s more to this..... I break it down below ⬇️
____________________________________________________________
Sorbitol is very similar to xylitol.... it’s a sugar alcohol you’ll usually see in things like toothpaste, oral care, and some personal care products. Its main role is to help with texture and moisture, keeping products from drying out and making them easier to use.
Sorbitol isn’t something I put into a strong “avoid” category. It’s mainly there to support the formula rather than provide major benefits on its own. In oral care specifically, it helps keep toothpaste smooth and prevents it from drying out.
From what I’ve seen, it doesn’t have the same level of benefits as something like xylitol, but it also doesn’t raise major concerns for me in small amounts. How much is being used and how often you’re exposed to is most important to look at.
For me, this is one that falls into a pretty neutral category. Not something I seek out, but not something I go out of my way to avoid either.
What I look for:
- the overall formulation of the product
- how often I’m being exposed to it
- choosing products that are simple and intentional
What I’m more mindful of:
- unnecessary fillers that don’t add much benefit
- overly complex formulas when a more simple option exists
At the end of the day, this is one of those ingredients that’s just… there. Not a major benefit, not a major concern... just something I take into account as part of the full picture.
